DBC Weekly Content 009

For the week beginning Sunday, May 17, 2020

We are praying today for the large wave of churches that are reopening for the first time this morning. Join us in lifting up our brothers and sisters as they take the initial steps to normalcy and fellowship. This is a difficult journey, and now 3 Sundays in, I am glad that we are nearing our next phase of reopening and can be a help to others on our mission field. The Lord continues to use DBC as a “Barnabas” among our sister churches and for that I am thankful. Our God is so faithful.

Our view of the government often depends on our current circumstances. Paul dealt with the believer’s relationship to governing authorities. He called for submission to authority, balancing the government’s God-given right to rule with our submission to God, who alone holds absolute authority. Focus on Romans 13:1-14 and 9-18 in your Bible and the comments for session 12 in your Explore the Bible Personal Study Guide. Consider ways believers should seek to represent Christ well in their communities and world.

Adult— Explore the Bible (5/17/20)

When have you received stellar service? Good customer service is about doing what’s right and helping the other person. We have seen this played out during the COVID-19 crisis. People doing the right thing and helping others. When we’re talking about relationships, the principle still applies: we strengthen our relationships when we help and serve the other person. Serving is a tangible way to love others. Join us as we discover the biblical mandate to serve by carrying the burden of others.

CALL TO WORSHIP
[Psalm 4:1-8 ESV] 1 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! 2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah 3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. 4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. 6 There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” 7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. 8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

BENEDICTION
[Matthew 7:7-11 ESV] 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

When have you sacrificed something important to you for a higher cause? We celebrate people who willingly sacrifice for a greater cause. Paul told the Roman believers that Christians were also called to live as sacrifices. Focus on Romans 12:1-2 and 9-18 in your Bible and read the comments for session 11 in your Explore the Bible Personal Study Guide. How does a person’s attitudes, actions, and desires demonstrate a commitment to Christ?

Adult— Explore the Bible (5/10/20)

How dependent is your forgiveness on someone else’s apology? How do we forgive someone who has hurt us? Can you forgive the person who infected a loved one with the Coronavirus? It’s hard and seems counter-intuitive but forgiveness is always the right thing to do. Join us this week as we take on this difficult topic.

[Jeremiah 9:23-24 ESV] 23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. Think back to when you were a kid. When the time came to choose players for kickball, how quickly were you picked? Were you one of the first or were you one of the last to be picked? All of us want to be included. The good news is God includes all who come to Him in faith. Paul reminded his readers that salvation through faith in Jesus is available to everyone.
Read Romans 11:17-32 in your Bible and the comments for session 10 in your Explore the Bible Personal Study Guide. Think about how your relationship with Jesus affects how you view others.

Adult— Explore the Bible (5/3/20)

For many, these past few weeks of social distancing have provided extra time at home. Many are putting that time to good use by trying their hand at something new. Have you learned any new skills? Taken up a new hobby? Most times, the simplest way to learn a new skill is to watch someone else complete it. As the old adage goes: Some things are more caught than taught. And Barnabas is someone worth watching. By his example, he showed us three ways we can encourage others. Join our discussion this week as we dig into Acts 9 and 11!

CALL TO WORSHIP
[Psalm 37:16-18 ESV] 16 Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. 18 The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will remain forever;
